Global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions have steadily risen since the industrial revolution. In recent decades, the emissions scenario has only worsened, rising from 9.34 million tons in 1960 to 36.44 million tons in 2019. The growing concentration of atmospheric CO2 is mainly attributed to the consumption and burning of fossil fuels, which account for more than 80% of the world's primary energy demand. To help mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, biogas production in Brazil has advanced in recent years and has received incentives from the public and private sectors. The use of unconventional sources for energy generation, such as urban organic waste and residual biomass from agro-industry and agricultural processes, are exciting alternatives. With this in mind, this work aims to develop bench-scale bioreactors for generating and purifying methane-rich biogas. Autodesk® Inventor software was used to design the bioreactors. Once the bench-scale bioreactors have been built, biogas will be produced from the anaerobic co-digestion of urban and agro-industry organic waste. The biogas generated will be purified by photosynthetic carbon capture using microalgae.
